Texas has a long, proud tradition of doing things at its own pace. After all, this is the state where Civil War fighting continued one month after the South’s surrender at Appomattox. And Texas is the place that continues to build apartments even as the rest of the country slammed the brakes due to the recession. Nationally, seven submarkets added at least 3,000 units apiece in calendar 2009. Six are in Texas. Shocking, right?

Here they are:

  1. Champions (Houston): 4,427 units
  2. Northwest San Antonio (San Antonio): 4,096 units
  3. Katy/Southwest Houston (Houston): 3,997 units
  4. West Plano (Dallas): 3,993 units
  5. Northern Suburbs (Austin): 3,477 units
  6. West Inner Loop (Houston): 3,403 units
  7. South Atlanta/South Fulton County (Atlanta): 3,130 units
