Texas has a long, proud tradition of doing things at its own pace. After all, this is the state where Civil War fighting continued one month after the South’s surrender at Appomattox. Nationally, seven submarkets added at least 3,000 units apiece in calendar 2009. Six are in Texas. Shocking, right?

5. Northern Suburbs (Austin): 3,477 units
6. West Inner Loop (Houston): 3,403 units
7. South Atlanta/South Fulton County (Atlanta): 3,130 units
