What’s New in Social: How to Use #Hashtags, Pinterest Hits 150 Million, and Facebook Free Basics
It’s crucial for property management professionals to find innovative ways to connect with prospects and generate business, and social media is a powerful tool to help. Here are some of the latest social media marketing trends to watch:
Pinterest Hits 150 Million
Looks like things are about to get even more “pinteresting”. This month, Pinterest passed the 150 million mark for its users, which is up 50 percent year over year. In a recent blog, Pinterest reported user stats that paint a compelling picture. 75 percent of sign-ups are coming from outside the U.S. and 40 percent of users signing up are men. It would appear that not only is theamount of users changing, but the average user is shifting as well. As Pinterest continues to evolve into an online, interactive storefront, we can expect to see the site will steadily increase in usage.
How to Use #Hashtags
If you are on social media, you know about hashtags. They are words that have the pound sign (#), for example, #TGIF. The pound sign (#) turns the word into a searchable tag. This allows users to find discussions or shareable content on that topic. A new report looks at the optimal number of hashtags and hashtag length and how that effects the post on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Twitter created the hashtag. The data shows that tweets with only one hashtag received the most engagement, and hashtags with 18 characters perform best. It’s important to note with Twitter, you only have a 140 character count. On Instagram, the most engaging posts have between nine – twelve hashtags. This should help you increase your reach on the platform.
Hashtags with 21-24 characters also perform best. Facebook rolled out the use of hashtags a few years ago, although it has not been as popular as Twitter and Instagram. The data shows that one hashtag is optimal on Facebook and having more than six can reduce engagement. In regards to character length, six performed better than tags with more than ten characters. How can I find the best hashtag? Each platform has a “What’s Trending” section that can provide you inspiration for your post. It is best to be specific, simple, and provide context. Next time you post, join in on the discussion and use a #Hashtag.
Facebook Expands Free Basics
Facebook recently launched Free Basics, a service that offers users the ability to access specific websites without using data or Wi-Fi. The free mobile app is targeted toward people without reliable and affordable internet access, and has already launched in 49 countries. While not all websites are accessible through the zero-rating app, a range of “free basic services such as news, maternal health, travel, local jobs, sports, communication and local government information” are available. Recently, Facebook has been in talks with the White House to launch Free Basics in the United States. The social network hopes that providing connectivity around the world will introduce people to the benefits of the internet and help improve their lives.
