To Be or To Do? That is the Question.
“To-Do lists are great for keeping us organized and helping us get through our busy days, but do they really help us accomplish creating the image, person, and character needed to run our business or live our lives more successfully?”
This got me thinking about doing vs. being. I have To-Do lists for both work and my private life, who doesn’t? But the idea of transforming those goals into something I want to be rather than do is more introspective. Certainly on a professional level, I can target such things as engaging those in the industry through sites like this to foster thinking around issues.
On a personal level, I gave this a shot using one of my triathlon training goals for the year:
- To-Do: To complete my first marathon in 2011.
- To-Be: To be mentally prepared for when I eventually attempt a full Ironman-distance triathlon by completing my first marathon in 2011.
Converting items from doing to being requires some thought on your part. I found the exercise challenging for something as simple as wanting to run a marathon for the first time. But I also found it enlightening as I had to think about the kind of athlete I want to be rather than simply listing training and race goals.
I’m not going to do away with my To-Do lists, but this will be a nice exercise for going beyond merely listing tasks and exploring the type of person I want TO BE.
What about you? What’s on your TO-BE list for this year and more specifically, what’s on it related to the multifamily industry? Share them in the comments below.
